Abstract

Dr. C. Everett Koop was appointed Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health, U.S. Public Health Service (PHS) in February 1981, and sworn in as Surgeon General on November 17, 1981. The collection documents Koop's career as a leading pediatric surgeon during the 1950s-1970s, his activities as Surgeon General from 1981-1989 and the many public health issues with which he was concerned, and some of his post-Surgeon General's career as a health advocate.

Dr. Emanuel Libman received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, and was associated with the Mount Sinai Hospital as a pathologist, and attending and consulting physician. Among the correspondents are Maude Abbott, Ludwig Aschoff, Ephraim M. Bluestone, Albert Einstein, Abraham Flexner, Abraham Jacobi, Charles andWilliam Mayo, Hideyo Noguchi, William Osler, M. Rachmilewitz, Humphry Rolleston, and William H. Welch.

Dr. John Adriani (1907-1988) was a nationally known anesthesiologist who played a key role in anesthesiology's evolution into a full-blown medical specialty. Most of the collection reflects Adriani's career in anesthesiology after it began to flower in the late 1940s.
